Waypoints 8 to 10
From waypoint 5 the route is a fairly steep climb rising to 900msl then an easy walk to waypoint 10. Here the rocks are geologically younger, consisting of banked sandstone, siltstone and chert of varying grain sizes. This details the different depositional settings of rock formation. The bedding of these rocks are unique. They all slant and dip towards the south. These sedimentary rocks were folded by tectonic forces into synclines where the youngest rocks are in the centre. At waypoint 10 you can look down at the river bed, which cross-cuts the syncline and ponder on the several million years that you have climbed on your hike of a few hundred metres!
The plant life on this section is mostly grassland. Various species of wild flower as well as Protea caffra (subspecies Fulcata) can be seen. You may also encounter a fan leafed bulbous plant with pink pincushion flowers, Boophone distichia, or Sore-eye Flower. Do not touch or pick, hence the name.
Enjoy the view towards Baviaanskop. At waypoint 11 you can branch off to the right and a short climb will take you to the top of the mountain at 1009msl for a 360 degree view of the Dekaap Valley.
